One Dead in Suspected DUII Semi-Truck Crash on I-5 Near Canyonville, OR

Canyonville, OR (April 6, 2026) — A fatal crash involving a stalled commercial truck occurred Monday afternoon on Interstate 5 near milepost 90 in Douglas County. According to the Oregon State Police, the crash happened around 3:00 p.m. when a northbound Freightliner semi-truck hauling a loaded trailer stalled on an uphill grade in the outside lane.

Investigators reported that the semi-truck had stalled multiple times while attempting to climb the grade. A Honda CR-V traveling northbound then allegedly collided with the stalled truck. The impact caused both the Honda and the cargo from the semi-truck to catch fire. The driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three passengers in the vehicle were transported to hospitals with serious and minor injuries. Authorities stated that the commercial truck driver was not injured and has been arrested on charges including DUII and manslaughter. The investigation remains ongoing.

Why Was the Truck Stopped in the Lane?

One of the central questions in this case is why the semi-truck was stalled in a travel lane and whether it could have been moved or cleared before the collision occurred. Reports indicate the truck had difficulty climbing the grade and stalled more than once, which may be an important detail for investigators to examine.

Investigators will likely look at how long the truck remained in the lane, whether any warning signals were activated, and what steps were taken once the vehicle became disabled. A truck stopped in an active lane can create a serious hazard, especially on an uphill stretch where visibility is limited.

Looking at the Driver’s Condition

Authorities have alleged that impairment appears to be a contributing factor. In commercial trucking, allegations of DUI or DUII raise significant concerns because drivers are held to strict safety standards and are responsible for operating large, heavy vehicles in changing traffic conditions.

Investigators will likely examine the driver’s condition leading up to the crash, including when the trip began, how long the driver had been on the road, and whether there were signs of impairment before the truck stalled.

The Role of the Trucking Company

When a crash involves a commercial driver accused of DUII, the investigation often extends beyond the individual driver. It can also include reviewing the trucking company’s hiring and oversight practices.

Companies are generally expected to screen drivers before allowing them to operate commercial vehicles. This can include checking driving history, confirming licensing, and ensuring the driver meets safety requirements. If there were any prior issues or warning signs, investigators may examine whether those were identified and addressed.

Drug and alcohol testing policies may also come under review. Investigators may look at whether required testing procedures were followed and whether the company had systems in place to monitor driver fitness for duty.

Why a Full Investigation Is Critical

With multiple serious factors involved, a detailed investigation will be necessary to understand how these elements came together. Reviewing vehicle data, driver records, and company policies can help clarify what happened and whether additional contributing factors were involved. This process is important to ensure that conclusions are based on a complete and accurate picture of the events.

Look for an Attorney With Experience in Serious Truck Accident Cases

Crashes involving stalled commercial vehicles and allegations of impairment often raise complex questions about both driver conduct and company responsibility. These cases require a careful review of safety practices, regulatory compliance, and how the situation developed on the roadway.

Because of that, it is important to work with an attorney who understands how to evaluate both the driver’s actions and the company’s role. Attorneys certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in truck accident law have demonstrated experience handling these types of cases, and few attorneys in the Pacific Northwest hold that certification. Tom D’Amore, founder of D’Amore Law Group, has more than 30 years of experience and is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
