One Killed in Semi-Truck and Pedestrian Crash on Highway 97 in Klamath County, OR

Klamath Falls, OR (June 22, 2026) — A Klamath Falls man died Monday night after being struck by a semi-truck on Highway 97 near milepost 200 in Klamath County. Oregon State Police responded to the crash just after 10 p.m. According to investigators, the man had entered the roadway in an attempt to retrieve his dog, which had run into the road. The truck driver was uninjured. The investigation is ongoing.

How the Circumstances Affect the Investigation

The circumstances here are unusual and unfortunate. A person entering a highway at night to chase a dog creates an unexpected hazard, and investigators will need to carefully examine what each party could see and how much time the driver had to react.

That analysis is not straightforward. At highway speeds, a commercial truck covers significant ground in very little time, and the driver’s ability to detect and respond to a pedestrian in the roadway depends heavily on lighting conditions, vehicle speed, headlight range, and attentiveness. All of those factors will be part of the investigation.

What the Investigation Will Examine

Investigators will look at the truck’s speed relative to posted limits and safe operating conditions for nighttime highway travel. They will also examine the truck’s lighting systems, the driver’s sight lines, and whether any braking or evasive action was taken before impact.

Electronic data from the truck can help establish speed, braking, and throttle inputs in the seconds before the collision. That data, combined with physical evidence from the scene, will give investigators a clearer picture of what the driver knew and when.

Shared Roadways and the Duty of Commercial Drivers

Federal regulations hold commercial truck drivers to a heightened standard of care, which includes operating at speeds and with levels of attention that account for unexpected conditions. A pedestrian on a highway at night is exactly the kind of hazard those standards are designed to address, even when that pedestrian’s presence is sudden and difficult to anticipate. Whether the driver met that standard is a question the investigation will need to answer.
