Pedestrian Killed in Semi-Truck Crash on Highway 97 in Klamath County, OR
Klamath County, OR (May 16, 2026) — An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a semi-truck on Highway 97 near milepost 264, according to Oregon State Police. Authorities said the crash occurred around 4:15 a.m.
Investigators reported that a Freightliner commercial truck traveling southbound struck a pedestrian who was walking in the southbound lane of the highway. Officials stated the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was in the roadway for reasons that remain unknown. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
Examining Visibility and Reaction Time
Crashes involving pedestrians on rural highways are often difficult to fully understand based on early reports alone. In this case, investigators will likely focus on visibility, reaction time, and how much opportunity the truck driver had to recognize and respond to someone in the roadway.
The crash reportedly happened before sunrise, and investigators may examine lighting conditions, headlight visibility, and how far ahead the pedestrian could have been seen. Even when a pedestrian is wearing dark clothing, investigators still typically examine whether a commercial driver had enough time or distance to react safely.
Looking at the Truck Driver’s Response
Because commercial trucks require substantially longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles, timing becomes especially important in crashes like this. Investigators may review whether the truck driver braked, swerved, or took any evasive action before impact.
Electronic data from the truck could also help show the vehicle’s speed and braking activity in the moments leading up to the collision. In some cases, that information helps clarify whether the situation developed suddenly or whether there was time to respond.
Why the Circumstances Matter
Authorities have stated that the pedestrian was in the roadway for an unknown reason, which means investigators are still piecing together the full picture. Questions may remain about how long the pedestrian had been there, whether other drivers encountered the same situation, and what conditions existed along that stretch of highway at the time.
When key details are still unknown, a careful investigation becomes important for understanding exactly what happened rather than relying only on initial assumptions.

Legal Considerations in Pedestrian Truck Crashes
Pedestrian crashes involving semi-trucks often involve questions about visibility, driver response time, and what could reasonably be seen or avoided under the circumstances. These cases can become complicated quickly, particularly when the incident happens at night or on a rural highway.
Since the operation of a truck is highly regulated, it’s important to consider hiring an attorney experienced in truck crashes, specifically if you find yourself in a similar situation. Attorneys certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in truck accident law have demonstrated experience handling these types of cases, and few attorneys in the Pacific Northwest hold that certification. Tom D’Amore, founder of D’Amore Law Group, has more than 30 years of experience and is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. If you lost someone or were injured in a crash involving a commercial truck, schedule a consultation to discuss what happened and what questions still need answers.
