One Killed in Semi-Truck vs. Pedestrian Crash on North Levee Road in Puyallup, WA

Puyallup, WA (June 21, 2026) — A 25-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a semi-truck on North Levee Road in Puyallup. Puyallup police responded to the crash at approximately 3:10 a.m. in an area that serves several distribution centers. The truck driver remained at the scene, was questioned by investigators, and was released. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

What Investigators Will Need to Determine

A pedestrian fatality involving a commercial truck at 3:10 a.m. raises several immediate questions. Investigators will need to establish why a pedestrian was on or near the roadway at that hour, whether the truck driver had adequate visibility to detect and avoid the pedestrian, and whether the truck’s speed and lighting were appropriate for the conditions.

North Levee Road’s proximity to distribution centers means it likely sees regular commercial truck activity, including vehicles entering and exiting loading areas, making turns, and operating in conditions where pedestrian presence, while uncommon, is not impossible. That operational context will be part of the investigation.

Factors at the Center of This Case

Pre-dawn crashes in industrial areas often turn on questions of lighting, both roadway illumination and the truck’s own headlights and visibility systems. Investigators will examine whether the truck’s lights were functioning properly, whether the pedestrian was visible in time for the driver to react, and whether the driver was attentive to the road ahead.

Federal regulations require commercial truck drivers to operate at speeds and with levels of alertness that allow them to respond to conditions as they encounter them. Darkness alone does not excuse a failure to detect a person in the roadway if proper caution was not being exercised.

Why the Driver Being Released Isn’t Necessarily the End of the Investigation

The fact that the truck driver was questioned and released at the scene is standard procedure and does not indicate that liability has been determined. A release at the scene reflects the status of any immediate criminal investigation, not the outcome of a civil liability analysis. Those are separate inquiries, and the civil question of whether the truck driver or the carrier bears responsibility for this death remains open until a full investigation is complete.
