Semi-Truck Crash Into Barrier Spills Fuel on I-5 Near Steilacoom DuPont Road in DuPont, WA

DuPont, WA (April 1, 2026) — A semi-truck crash early Wednesday morning shut down all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Steilacoom DuPont Road after the vehicle struck a barrier and spilled a significant amount of diesel fuel. According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:00 a.m. when the truck allegedly lost control, veered to the right, and hit multiple concrete barriers.

Authorities estimated that up to 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway. The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Why Did the Truck Lose Control?

At this point, the key question is what caused the semi-truck to lose control before striking the barrier. Early reports describe the vehicle veering to the right, but they do not explain what led to that movement.

Investigators will need to look at both driver-related factors and the condition of the truck itself. In cases like this, it is important to determine whether the loss of control was caused by something inside the cab, something happening on the roadway, or a problem with the vehicle’s systems.

Looking at Maintenance and Mechanical Condition

One important step will be reviewing the truck’s service and inspection history. Commercial trucks are required to undergo regular maintenance, and those records can show whether any known issues existed before the crash.

Investigators may look at components such as brakes, steering systems, and tires to determine whether the truck had been properly maintained. If a known issue was missed or not addressed, that could become a key factor in understanding what happened.

Could a Component Have Failed?

In addition to maintenance, investigators may also consider whether any part of the truck failed unexpectedly. A sudden failure in a steering component, tire, or braking system can cause a driver to lose control without warning.

If a failure like that occurred, the focus may shift to whether the part was defective or failed under normal operating conditions. In those situations, the investigation may involve examining the component itself to determine whether it performed as expected.

Why a Full Investigation Is Important

With limited information available, a thorough investigation will be necessary to determine what led to the crash. This includes reviewing physical evidence, inspecting the truck, and analyzing any available data from the vehicle.

Understanding whether mechanical issues, maintenance problems, or other factors played a role is key to determining what happened.

Experience in Commercial Truck Mechanical Failure Cases

Crashes involving potential mechanical issues can require a detailed review of maintenance practices, inspection records, and the condition of the vehicle at the time of the incident. These cases often go beyond driver conduct and involve questions about equipment reliability and compliance with safety standards.

Because of that, it is important to work with an attorney who understands how to investigate both mechanical and operational factors in commercial truck crashes. Attorneys certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in truck accident law have demonstrated experience handling these types of cases, and few attorneys in the Pacific Northwest hold that certification.
