According to a study widely reported in the media last week, researchers investigating the effect of personal technology on roadway safety found that texting truckers are 23 times as likely as their non-texting counterparts to be involved in a crash or a near miss. Researchers analyzed commercial trucking data from 2004 to 2007 that involved 203 truckers and 3 million miles of driving.
The study has catalyzed a group of Democratic senators led by New York’s Charles Schumer to introduce legislation that would ban texting while driving throughout the United States.
