Our founder, Tom D’Amore, published an op-ed in The Register-Guard highlighting the urgent need to reform trucking laws in Oregon and at the federal level. The piece uses the death of 25-year-old paramedic and volunteer firefighter Sarah Susman as an example of how these lax regulations harm everyday Americans.
Drawing from decades of experience representing victims of catastrophic trucking accidents, Tom outlined how systemic industry failures, such as unsafe hiring practices, inadequate oversight, and the dangerous loophole of double brokering, continue to put lives at risk and allow bad actors to skirt accountability. He also called for Oregon to eliminate outdated damage caps and federal lawmakers to raise minimum insurance requirements for trucking companies, unchanged since 1980.
Tom emphasized that until stronger safety standards and accountability measures are in place, tragedies like Sarah’s will continue.
