Foreign Jewelry Poses Risk of Lead Poisoning in Children

In a recent article, researchers revealed that a 1-year-old boy living in New York City had a rapid increase in blood lead levels that was traced to a Cambodian amulet made from knotted string and metallic beads that the child has been wearing since 3 months of age.

The article highlighted the risk of foreign-made jewelry as a potential source of lead poisoning in children, especially those from immigrant families.

Other foreign-made products that pose a risk of lead poisoning include spices, candy, and other ethnic foods; cosmetics, health remedies; ceramics; and pottery.
