As a follow-up to our previous post on crib safety, a new report reveals that more than 9,500 infants go to the emergency room each year because of crib related injuries. The nineteen year study by the journal Pediatrics also shows that every year an average of 113 infants die as a result of crib accidents.
The crib industry has endured several recalls in recent years. The latest involves baby bassinets made by Burlington Basket Co. A statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) indicates the bassinets could collapse if not assembled properly. The voluntary recall involves an estimated 500,000 units.
The CPSC issued new regulations on crib safety in December. Among the changes, the controversial drop side crib design was banned and all cribs must now undergo a rigorous safety test before they go to market. The new rules go into effect in June.
