One Killed, 3 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Transit Bus on SR 104 in Jefferson County, WA

Jefferson County, WA (March 3, 2026) — A fatal three-vehicle crash involving a Jefferson Transit bus occurred Tuesday evening on State Route 104 near Beaver Valley Road outside Port Ludlow. Washington State Patrol reported the collision at approximately 7:00 p.m.

According to initial reports, a Honda CR-V traveling westbound on SR 104 allegedly crossed the center line and struck an eastbound transit bus head-on. After that impact, the bus crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a Toyota Tacoma traveling behind the CR-V. The driver of the CR-V was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both occupants of the Tacoma were transported to Jefferson General Hospital with injuries. Authorities said the bus driver was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, while a passenger on the bus was not injured. Investigators confirmed that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Why Crashes Like This Can Be Complex

Based on early reports, investigators believe the initial collision occurred when the westbound CR-V allegedly crossed the center line and struck the transit bus. That first impact appears to have set off a chain reaction that ultimately involved the Tacoma traveling behind the CR-V.

In crashes like this, investigators often work to determine exactly how the first impact affected the movement of the other vehicles. The force of a head-on collision can push or redirect vehicles across lanes, leaving little time for other drivers nearby to react.

Could Multiple Vehicles Share Responsibility?

Even when initial reports point to one vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic, investigators still examine the actions of every driver involved. Washington follows a comparative fault system, which means responsibility can sometimes be shared depending on how each vehicle was being operated before and during the crash.

In this case, investigators will likely review how the bus responded after the initial collision. A large vehicle such as a transit bus requires significant distance to slow or regain control, particularly after a sudden head-on impact. Understanding how the bus moved after the first collision may help clarify how the Tacoma became involved.

The Tacoma, which was traveling behind the CR-V, may have had little or no opportunity to avoid the crash once the bus crossed into its lane. Determining the timing of those events will be an important part of the investigation.

Evidence That May Help Figure Out What Happened

Multi-vehicle crashes often require a detailed reconstruction to understand how the impacts occurred and how each vehicle moved afterward. Investigators may examine vehicle damage patterns, roadway evidence, and any available electronic data from the transit bus.

Witness statements and dispatch records may also help establish the timeline of events leading up to the crash. Reviewing these details allows investigators to determine whether the initial reports accurately describe how the collision happened.

Legal Considerations in Crashes Involving Large Commercial Vehicles

When serious crashes involve large vehicles such as buses or commercial trucks, the investigation can involve additional legal and regulatory considerations. Evaluating these cases may require an understanding of vehicle operation standards, safety practices, and the responsibilities placed on professional drivers and transportation operators.

Attorneys certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in truck accident law have demonstrated experience handling complex cases involving large commercial vehicles. Only a limited number of attorneys nationwide hold this certification. Tom D’Amore, founder of D’Amore Law Group, has more than 30 years of experience and holds this certification. This background is important when evaluating serious crashes involving large vehicles in Washington.
