Tom D’Amore spoke with The Portland Business Journal about President Donald Trump’s recent executive order aimed at the law firm Perkins Coie, which has a significant presence in Portland. Two Perkins Coie attorneys were previously involved in an FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. This executive order, issued on March 7, seeks to strip the firm of access to government buildings, security clearances, and government contracts.
D’Amore emphasized the importance of protecting attorneys’ ability to represent their clients without fear of government retaliation, saying:
“Lawyers need to be free to represent their clients without fear of government retaliation,” he said. “Sometimes, the government is on the other side of cases that attorneys handle. That’s part of what makes us a free society. When you have intentional interference in the legal profession, which is supposed to be based on justice, Trump has decided to go the other way.”
U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell has since temporarily blocked parts of the executive order, citing concerns related to the rights granted by the First and Sixth Amendments.
