Oregonian Article Examines Bodycam Video in Death of Freddie Nelson, Jr.
The article also stated, “Several security experts who viewed the video at the request of The Oregonian/OregonLive said Gimbel likely could have avoided the shooting by adopting a less aggressive demeanor or simply moving out of the way of Nelson’s truck.”
The D’Amore Law Group filed a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit in October 2021 on behalf of Freddy’s wife Kari Nelson and the Estate of Freddy Nelson, Jr. against Gimbel and his employer, Cornerstone Security and TMT Development Co.
“A complete review of the footage, including video from a dashboard camera in Gimbel’s patrol car, his body camera and a parking lot security camera,” Tom D’Amore said, “shows more information, including that Gimbel stuck his arm in the back window of Freddy’s car and pepper sprayed Freddy and his wife, impairing their vision.”
As set forth in the wrongful death complaint, D’Amore said, “Freddy Nelson’s death is the result of negligence and extremely reckless practices. We hope to not only show the deadly consequences of large corporations flouting the law but also cast light on the worrisome increase in under-regulated and under-trained private security guards.
Freddy’s death sadly fits into the national conversation about excessive force, gun control, and the privatization of police. By way of the family’s wrongful death lawsuit, we hope to not only show the deadly consequences of large corporations flouting the law, but also cast light on the worrisome increase in under-regulated and under-trained private security guards.”
Gimbel’s criminal trial is tentatively scheduled for October, 2022. The wrongful death action on behalf of Kari Nelson and the Estate of Freddy Nelson, Jr., is pending in the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon for the County of Multnomah against TMT Development Co., Cornerstone Security Group, and Logan Gimbel.
