Our founder, Tom D’Amore, recently spoke with KGW-TV about a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Ryan Martin, a father of eight who was tragically killed in a 2023 road rage-induced shooting in downtown Portland.
The lawsuit alleges that Multnomah County granted shooter Geoffrey Hammond a concealed handgun license despite a troubling history of violence and a restraining order secured by his daughter. It also claims that Uber allowing him to drive for the company violated its own firearm policies and that the rideshare company overlooked clear risks in its background checks.
Tom explained that cases like this are essential for holding institutions accountable when systemic failures set the stage for gun violence. By pursuing litigation against local governments and large corporations, victims’ families not only seek justice for their loved ones but also help create stronger policies and regulations that can tangibly reduce gun violence.
