D’Amore Law Group is proud to announce the recipient of this year’s eponymous scholarship and congratulates Alanna McNaughton on impressing the judges with her desire to improve the policies that govern accuracy, access, and safety for online users around the world.
“Alanna’s essay demonstrates a sharp intellect that drives a compassionate and inclusive approach to problem solving – a skill that will serve her well as a trial lawyer,” said Tom D’Amore, Managing Partner of D’Amore Law Group. “She shows incredible promise, and we wish her well as she begins her legal studies at UCLA School of Law.”
A self-named “mis- and disinformation researcher,” Alanna is already familiar with the empirical evidence regarding the harmful impact of online censorship and overall manipulation of information. Her work with a national reproductive rights organization introduced her to everyday Americans who were frequently misled by search engine hacks, incorrectly translated webpages, or unethical advertising practices, creating inaccurate healthcare information.
“I hope to contribute a perspective that is deeply informed by intersecting disciplines and that ensures the future of technology is safer and more equitable for all,” said Alanna in her essay. “Subsequently, I hope that the innovation required to produce these regulations will create a model for future global governance in our increasingly connected international society.”
Alanna earned her B.A. in Political Science and her B.F.A. in Theatre Arts from Boston University. In Fall 2022, she will enter UCLA School of Law. Alanna plans to use her future law degree to support researchers, policymakers, and technology platform leaders in developing innovative regulation of the world wide web.
